It’s the most-requested flexibility in most leave policies and the most common source of balance disputes, for one reason. ### “Half a day” is not a fixed quantity A policy written in days quietly assumes that every employee’s day is the same length. The moment that stops being true, half-days produce inequity. For someone working five eight-hour days, half a day is four hours. For a colleague on a compressed four-day week of ten-hour shifts, it’s five. For a part-timer working three six-hour days, it’s three. Deduct “0.5 days” from all three and you have taken a different amount of time from each — and given the compressed-week employee a 25% better deal than the full-timer sitting next to them. Tracking in hours dissolves the problem. Tracking in days creates it. If your system stores entitlement as hours and displays it as days, half-days work correctly for everyone. If it stores days, you will be writing exception rules forever. A second, quieter issue: a half-day isn’t always half a shift. Someone starting at 2 pm who takes “the morning off” has taken nothing. Part-day leave needs a start and end time, not just a fraction. ### United States Two rules matter, and they pull in different directions. Exempt employees. You cannot reduce an exempt employee’s salary for a partial-day absence — doing so risks the exemption. What you can do is deduct the half-day from their PTO balance, which keeps salary whole and the exemption intact. The limit is familiar: once the balance is exhausted, you still cannot dock salary for a partial day. The one carve-out is intermittent FMLA leave, where partial-day deductions are expressly permitted. Non-exempt employees are paid for hours worked, so part-days are straightforward — provided the hours are actually recorded. Statutory sick leave has its own increment rules, and they bite. California (https://vacationtracker.io/leave-laws/usa/california/) permits an employer to set a reasonable minimum increment for using paid sick leave, but caps it at two hours. A policy requiring sick leave to be taken in half-day blocks is therefore unlawful there, because half a day exceeds two hours for almost everyone. Other jurisdictions set their own caps. If your system enforces a half-day minimum across all leave types, check it against every sick leave statute you’re subject to. ### Canada Federally regulated employers. Under section 206.6 of the Canada Labour Code, personal leave may be taken in one or more periods — but the employer may require that each period be not less than one day. Half-days are therefore permitted only if the employer allows them. Ontario. The rule catches people out. Vacation must be scheduled in weekly blocks by default — a two-week block or two one-week blocks for employees with under five years’ service, three weeks’ worth for those with more. Shorter periods, including single days and part-days, are possible only where the employee requests it in writing or electronically and the employer agrees. So an Ontario employer cannot simply offer half-day vacation as a policy feature: the request has to come from the employee, in writing. Quebec. Annual leave is likewise expected to be taken in a continuous period, with splitting available at the employee’s request. ### Internationally United Kingdom. Statutory leave may be taken in instalments, and half-days are a contractual matter rather than a statutory one. The practical catch is that the 5.6-week entitlement is expressed in weeks, so converting to days and then halving them is exactly where part-timers get shortchanged. Australia. Annual leave can be taken in any period agreed between employer and employee, including part-days. Personal and carer’s leave is deducted in hours under the National Employment Standards, which handles part-days cleanly without any half-day concept at all. ### Frequently asked questions How much is a half-day of leave? Half of that employee’s own scheduled working day, which differs between full-timers, part-timers and compressed-week staff. It’s not a fixed number of hours across a workforce. Can an employer refuse half-day leave? Generally yes — it’s a policy choice in most places. In Ontario, the opposite problem applies: part-day vacation requires the employee’s written request and the employer’s agreement. Can you deduct a half-day from a salaried employee’s pay? No. Deduct it from their PTO balance instead. Reducing salary for a partial-day absence risks the exemption. Can sick leave be taken in half-days? Often, but check the minimum-increment rules — California caps the increment an employer may require at two hours.
