What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of startups? Free food and beverages? Or maybe pet-friendly offices with a pool table and chill-out space? Maybe unlimited PTO? Probably all of these benefits. Being a part of a startup can truly be amazing.

However, if you are working in a startup, you are often forced to work on various tasks which are sometimes far beyond your expertise. It’s a high-stress level environment, and those working in it can often find themselves in a fight-or-flight state.

Besides giving you the opportunity to get hands-on experience, working in a startup enables you to be a part of something new, and transform an idea into reality. Successful companies are here where they are because of their loyal employees, and a healthy company culture is a significant part of their success. Do you want to know what is essential for a successful startup culture? It’s all about communication, and strong relationships in startups.

Keep on reading and find out the secret behind the building and maintaining strong relationships in startups.

1. Encourage action for better communication

One of the main differences between startups and corporations hides in the way of doing business. Corporations are well structured and do what is proven to work. On the other side, startups often do what’s never been done before.

By doing these things, they are coming up with new and innovative approaches. Startups often encourage their employees to take action, try something new and think outside of the box. And these are not easy tasks. While working on various tasks, and coming up with different solutions, the entire team communicates and with that, creates a bond that will help them overcome any stressful situation.

Remember, we can do great things individually, but as a group, we are unstoppable.

2. It’s not about the “Big Guy – it’s in all of you.”

The founder of the company is the one who sets the values. And one of the main values in every company should be building strong relationships among employees. With every person hired, comes something specific and unique which is further built into the company culture. That’s why founders should think about hiring like-minded people that will turn their vision into reality.

However, even though the founder is the one who encourages building strong relationships, it’s up to the team to create them. Be open-minded, respectful of others, and hear them out. That’s how you’ll create everlasting relationships.

3. Transparency is a must

People like to feel like a part of the group – it’s in our nature. And if they have a strong sense of belonging at work, they will put more effort into everything they do. Transparency is one of the most important things for building and maintaining strong relationships in startups.  We spend a great deal of our day at work, so it’s a fair trade to be involved in what is happening in the company. Even when the news is bad, there should be clear communication with the team.

By being open with each other, the team will build trust and thus, a strong relationship.

4.  Do something together

Our jobs nowadays are making us inactive. We sit at our computers or laptops eight hours a day (sometimes even more) and we have to deal with back pain and stiffness. A great way of building a great startup culture has regular outdoor activities – a team building of a kind. It is a great way to bond as a team and to take care of your well-being.

5. You don’t need top performers if they don’t fit into your team

Sometimes there can be a dilemma between firing or keeping a top worker who is unable to get along with a group and often makes them frustrated. When you have a worker, who is, on average, 2 times more productive than the average worker it may be hard to let go. But, at the end of the day – the team is the most important. To build strong relationships in startups, you need people who get along well and are able to work in unison.

Great things never come easy. To achieve them you need hard work and dedication. And you need to be sure you’re surrounded by like-minded people. We have given you some tips on what makes a team functional and great – and it seems like it’s all in the people, well at least the major part. Choose vilely and nourish what you have. Great things are destined to come.
