Paid Time Off (PTO) in Mongolia
Vacation (Annual Leave) Quota
At least 15 days per year.
Full-time employees in Mongolia are entitled to 15 days of fully paid vacation leave per year. Employees may take their vacation after working for six months in the company. This entitlement is 15 days during the first 6 years of employment. After that, entitlement is increased after the 6th, 11th, 21st, 25th, and 32nd years, as presented below.
Employees under 18 are entitled to 20 days of vacation.
Employees working part-time have their number of vacation days calculated on a pro-rata basis but usually get at least 10 days of vacation time.
Employees working in hazardous or heavy positions might get extra vacation days on top of their basic entitlement. This depends on how long they’ve been with the company and the nature of the work they do.
Additional Vacation Days by Duration of Employment
Employees receive additional days of vacation according to their seniority (length of service):

6-10 years of service: + 3 days; (=> 18 days in total)

11-15 years: + 5 days; (=> 20 days in total)

16-20 years: + 7 days; (=> 22 days in total)

21-25 years: + 9 days; (=> 24 days in total)

25-31 years: + 11 days; (=> 26 days in total)

32+ years: + 14 days (=> 29 days in total).
Taking a Vacation
Vacation entitlement includes public holidays within vacation days but could also be on top of the regular entitlement. Employees may choose to split their vacation days throughout the year if they prefer. Despite this, they’re entitled to take at least 10 (out of 15) of those vacation days all at once.
Carry Over
If an employee can’t take all of his or her vacation days because of critical or pressing work needs, their employer has to pay them 1.5 times their normal pay for vacation.
PTO Payout at the Termination
If some employee leaves his or her job, he or she must get at least one month’s average salary as severance pay.
Sick Leave in Mongolia
Unlimited
Unlike many countries that provide a defined number of sick leave, employees in Mongolia may take sick leave for as long as they need it. Their employer shall pay for the first 5 days of leave, and after that, the state takes over the payments.
Payout
Payment of sick leave is different according to its duration:
- For the first 5 days of sick leave: 100% of the salary, paid by the employer;
- Afterwards: 50% - 75% of the salary, paid by Social Insurance.
Maternity and Paternity Leave
Maternity Leave in Mongolia
120 days
Female employees and workers in Mongolia are entitled to 120 days of paid maternity leave.
The leave may start 30 to 60 days before the expected date of confinement, and the rest of maternity leave may be used in the period 60 days after delivery.
Employers are not allowed to force a pregnant woman to take part in business trips, work overtime, or work at night without her agreement.
Payout
Eligible employees shall receive payments through the social insurance system while on maternity leave. To be eligible, they had to make at least 12 contributions to the program of social security.
Employees who qualify for this condition get 70% of their salary, paid by the social insurance program of Mongolia.
Adoption Leave
A working mother who adopts a child in Mongolia is entitled to the same amount of leave as mothers who go through regular pregnancy. This means that she can have an adoption leave of 60 days. A single father with a baby also has the same rights.
Leave due to a Stillbirth or Miscarriage
If a woman suffers the unfortunate event of a miscarriage after the 196th day of pregnancy, stillbirth, or terminated pregnancy in a hospital, she is entitled to maternity leave. This also applies if she gives birth to a premature baby before the 196th day that is able to survive.
If a stillbirth or pregnancy termination happens before the 196th day, the woman will receive sick leave instead.
Childcare Leave (Parental Leave)
For children under 3 years old.
Mothers who have already taken maternity leave and days of vacation or father who makes a request may also take childcare leave if they have a child who is under three years old.
Paternity Leave in Mongolia
10 days
Employees and workers in Mongolia are entitled to at least 10 days of fully paid paternity leave.
Bereavement Leave in Mongolia

Military Leave in Mongolia
For an employee who leaves his job to fulfill military service obligations, his employer must provide him severance pay.
