Companies all over the world struggle with finding and retaining the best talent. For a company’s success, it’s important that the employees who work there are qualified, motivated and satisfied. Different companies offer different benefits, from free lunches to paid conferences. And these are amazing ones. However, one of the most talked about benefits these days is implementing the unlimited vacation policy or unlimited PTO.

In one of our previous articles, we talked about the unlimited vacation policy, and you can read all about it here. The entire idea is fascinating, and many companies have started using it. While there might be disagreements about whether the unlimited vacation policy is a good or a bad thing, one thing is certain – it still requires time off tracking.

When you hear the word “unlimited” you must be wondering why should we track it. Well, there are numerous reasons.

1. Make sure the work gets done

Offering unlimited vacations sounds, and is, amazing. By switching to it employees realize that the company values them, and cares about them having a great work-life balance. We can all agree that’s one of the most important things.

And the other thing is trust. It shows that a company has trust in its employees, which results in a great work atmosphere and overall success.

However, there is a possible risk that someone might take advantage of the unlimited vacation days policy. If you’ve switched over to the unlimited vacation policy, it means you want your employees to be satisfied and to know they’re appreciated. Yet, on the other side, you have your clients. For a company’s success, it’s important that both the employees and the clients are happy. Which means you need to make sure the work gets one.

If an employee is taking a lot more vacation than reasonable, and it results in the project not being finished on time, that’s definitely taking advantage of the benefits offered by the company.

That’s why you need to make sure you track everyone’s days off, so you are certain the work in your company will get done and that everyone will be happy.

2. Burnout is a real thing, and it can be avoided

As we’ve mentioned, some employees might take advantage of the opportunities given to them. However, on the other hand, some might not take enough days off in a year. That can cause burnout.

By keeping track of your employees’ time off, you can see if an employee is not taking enough days off, which can have negative consequences. Encourage those employees to take more days off, as they’ll come back refreshed, with a clear mind and some new ideas. It’s good both for the company, and the employee.

Employees might sometimes feel like they cannot leave their work because they won’t finish everything on time and they’ll have a lot more things waiting for them when they come back. Explain why taking time off is good for them, and how it will actually affect their work when they come back.

3. In the end, it’s good to know

You might not see the need now, but you might need it in the future. Keeping track of everyone’s time off will leave you carefree knowing that whatever happens in the future, you’ve kept track and you have reliable reports of everyone’s time off.
