TriNet Acquired Cocoon: What It Means for Current Customers and Why You Should Evaluate Alternatives Now
If you're a current Cocoon customer, you've probably heard the news by now. TriNet acquired Cocoon in early April 2025. Maybe this doesn't concern you. Maybe the transition feels smooth and their roadmap still looks promising. But if you're the type who wants to understand what a change like this means before it happens to you, keep reading.
I'll be upfront: I work at a company called Vacation Tracker. This post exists because some Cocoon customers might be a good fit for what we've built. But I'm not here to just pitch you. I want to give you the real picture of what we do, what we don't do, and why right now might be worth paying attention to.
Watch the full breakdown here:
Cocoon Built Something Genuinely Impressive
Let's start with what Cocoon does well. FMLA compliance, claims filing, payroll calculations for complex regulated leave. These are real problems, and Cocoon solved them extremely well. That's not up for debate.

But now TriNet has come in. And I'm not here to tell you that's automatically a bad thing. TriNet says they're committed to a smooth transition. Cocoon's founders have spoken highly of the acquisition. There's no reason to assume disaster.
What Usually Happens After Software Acquisitions
Here's what we've seen happen when a focused, independent product gets acquired by a large platform company:
- The roadmap starts serving the acquirer's existing customer base
- Features built for original users become lower priority
- The standalone experience gets bundled into a broader product you didn't ask for
- Features you rely on get buried or deprioritized
We genuinely don't know which way this will go. But if you're evaluating your options while you still have the choice, that seems reasonable.
Vacation Tracker Is Built for Day-to-Day Leave Management
Vacation Tracker has been around since 2018. We've never taken outside investment. We're bootstrapped, which means no board is telling us to hit certain growth targets or forcing a sale. We answer to our customers. Full stop.
We're not perfect by any stretch. But over 3,500 companies have trusted us and stayed on our platform because our support team takes everything seriously, our product team obsesses over the user experience, and we ship things because they're useful or requested by customers.
What you see is what you get. We're focused on making leave management frictionless and as simple as possible.
The Product Lives Where You Already Work

Vacation Tracker fits natively in Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Workspace. You can also use our mobile app if you prefer.
The beauty of this is that employees don't have to use an outside platform to check if their requests got approved or to request time off in the first place. Everything happens in the app they use for work every day.
Every Leave Policy Imaginable Is Fully Customizable
You can create unlimited custom leave types. Black out dates for peak seasons. Accrual caps. Seniority-based leave. Multi-level approvals. Whatever makes your company's policies unique.
We're also built for global teams. Nine languages supported. Location-specific holidays. Custom work weeks or leave rules per office or department. Everything is configurable to fit you perfectly.
Burnout Prevention Is Built In

We have a recharge feature that surfaces leave patterns to help managers potentially spot burnout before it happens for at-risk employees. We're one of the only PTO tools doing this, and we're doing it because we want to make a tool that helps in more ways than just tracking leave.
Where Vacation Tracker Does NOT Replace Cocoon
I want to be straight with you. If your primary use case is FMLA compliance, claims filings with the state or insurers, or payroll calculations for extended regulated leaves, Vacation Tracker is not going to replace Cocoon for that.
Cocoon is genuinely amazing at that, and it's not an area we're in right now. What we are is the best tool for leave management that happens every single day. PTO, sick days. What the vast majority of companies need for their day-to-day operations.
Why Companies Are Evaluating Alternatives Now
When a company gets acquired, there's usually a window before pricing changes, before migrations, and before the platform gets restructured. Right now is when evaluating alternatives is low risk.
We offer a free plan and a 7-day free trial for our premium plan. No credit card required, and setup typically takes less than an hour.
We're not asking you to decide today. But since you're reading this, you've probably been thinking about it.
Leave Management Shouldn't Be Complicated
We built Vacation Tracker because leave management should not be complicated, and it definitely shouldn't require navigating a large HR platform (unless you want to be using that for your company).
We've kept Vacation Tracker focused on leave management and independent because that means we'll serve our customers best.
