Paid Time Off (PTO) in Moldova

Vacation Leave Quota

28 days

Employees in Moldova are entitled to a minimum of 28 days of paid vacation per year. Employees in Moldova are entitled to a minimum of 28 days of paid vacation per year. The exact number of vacation days is determined by the individual employment contract or other collective agreements. Moldova’s leave policy is one of the most generous vacation leave provisions in Europe, with far more days than in, for example, Germany, the Netherlands, or even France.

All employees, regardless of their job, are entitled to vacation leave. Non-working public holidays are not included in this vacation entitlement.

The following categories of employees can benefit from 4 additional vacation days:

  • Workers performing in harmful conditions;

  • Workers with severe visual disabilities;

  • Parents who have two or more children under the age of 14;

  • Parents with a child with disabilities;

  • Minors (workers less than 18 years old).

Employees can start taking vacation leave 6 months after the signing of the employment contract.

Sick Leave in Moldova

Paid by the employer for the first 15 days, then paid by social security.

There is no specific entitlement to a specific number of paid sick leave days for employees. An employee is allowed to take paid sick leave only after presenting a medical certificate to their employer.

Payout

Sick leave is paid in the following manner:

  • By the employer: for the first 15 days of leave, at a rate of 75% of average.

  • By the state social insurance: from day 15 to day 210, at a rate of 80% of average.

Maternity and Paternity Leave in Moldova

Maternity Leave

126 days

Female employees in Moldova are entitled to 126 days of paid maternity leave.

Maternity leave consists of:

  • 70 days of prenatal leave (before the birth of a child)

  • 56 days of postnatal leave (after the birth of a child)

A pregnant employee is required to provide a medical certificate confirming her pregnancy to be granted leave.

Maternity leave is paid by the state.

Paternity Leave

14 days

Paternity leave in Moldova is 14 days of paid paternity leave. This leave may be taken within the first 56 days after childbirth.

Paternity leave is also paid by the state.

Parental Leave

36 months

Employees who had a child may take up to 36 months of partially paid parental leave. After the end of maternity or paternity leave, any of the parents may take parental leave.

Payout

The state social insurance pays the leave regarding its length:

  • 1 year - 90% of the average earnings;
  • 2 years - 60% of the average earnings during the first year of leave, and 30% of the average earnings in the second year of leave;
  • 3 years - 30% of the average earnings.

Bereavement Leave in Moldova

3 days

Employees in Moldova are entitled to bereavement leave for the duration of:

  • 3 days in case of the death of an immediate family member (a parent, a child, or in-laws, etc.);

  • 1 day in case of the death of a relative who is not considered an immediate family.

To be eligible for bereavement leave, employees must have at least 6 months of continuous service at the organization.
