What employers need to know
Paid holidays
Vermont employers don't have to give paid or unpaid holidays. Employers that promise holidays in a written agreement, such as an employee handbook or memo, are liable to employees for them.
Holidays and overtime
Vermont requires at least time and a half when covered employees work more than 40 hours in a workweek. Some employers, such as retail or service establishments and hotels, motels and restaurants, are exempt from the state overtime law, but federal overtime may still apply.
Earned sick time
Under Vermont's earned sick time law, an employee earns at least one hour of paid sick time for every 52 hours worked. Employers may cap accrual at 40 hours in a 12-month period.
Holidays that fall on a weekend
Federal offices observe Saturday holidays on Friday and Sunday holidays on Monday.
Unused vacation when someone leaves
Vermont doesn't require employers to pay out accrued, unused vacation at termination, but a company policy that says so makes them responsible. Employers may also adopt a policy or contract that denies this payment.
