Holidays
There are six public holidays a year. Public holidays are paid and not included in the minimum annual holiday entitlement. Religious holidays are observed according to the Julian calendar.
- New Year’s Day – 1st and 2nd January
- Orthodox Christmas – 7th January
- Sovereignty Day of Serbia – 15th and 16th February
- Orthodox Good Friday (Julian) – Movable
- Orthodox Holy Saturday (Julian) – Movable
- Orthodox Easter Day (Julian) – Movable
- Orthodox Easter Monday (Julian) – Movable
- Labor Day – 1st May
- Armistice Day – 11th November
Employees are entitled to paid days off during the following religious holidays:
- Slava for members of the Orthodox community
- Christmas and Easter holidays for members of the Catholic community
- Ramazan Bajram and Kurban Bajram for members of the Islamic community
- Jom Kippur for members of the Jewish community
Accruals
PTO (Paid Time Off)
- Vacation / Annual Paid Leave
An employee is entitled to a minimum annual leave of 20 calendar days. An employee is entitled to annual leave after a month of consecutive service.
Annual leave can be used in one continuous period or in two smaller portions of time.
- Paid Days Off
Employees are entitled to up to 5 paid days off per year in order to get married, to take care of a close family member with a medical condition, due to a wife’s labor etc.
Employees are entitled to up to 2 days of paid leave due to a blood donation.
- Unpaid Leave
Employees can take unpaid leave due to
- Military Leave
- Employment in a foreign country provided by the employer
- Temporary employment for the other employer
- Engagement in a syndicate, political party or other public engagement
- Imprisonment or emergency situation up to 6 months
- Rollovers and payout of unused hours
- Use-it-or-lose-it policy
Employees who were not able to use their annual leave in the calendar year due to Maternity leave or Child care leave are entitled to use it in the following year till the 30th June.
Employers are required to provide a notice to their employees 15 days prior to the beginning of the annual leave.
- PTO payout at the termination
In case of dismissal of an employee he/she receives a monetary compensation for all unused days of the annual vacation.
- Maternity Leave, Paternity Leave, Child Care Leave and Adoptive and Foster Care Leave
Maternity Leave
A pregnant employee is entitled to up to a year of paid maternity leave. The earliest the leave may begin is 45 days before the estimated delivery date. The employee is required to provide a medical certificate. The latest the leave may begin is 28 days before the estimated delivery date. The employee is required to return to work 3 months after the birth of child.
The employees are entitled to 3 paid months of leave in cases of a miscarriage or a stillbirth.
If the employee returns to work before the end of maternity leave, an employer is required to provide her a 90 minutes paid lactation break during the workday.
Employees with 3 or more children are entitled to up to 2 years of paid maternity leave.
Paternity Leave
The employees are entitled to up to 3 months of paid paternity leave to care for their newborn due to a mother’s death, mother’s severe medical condition or illness, imprisonment or if the mother is unemployed.
Child Care Leave
Employees who have a child with a disability or with sever medical condition are entitled to take paid child care leave after the maternity or paternity leave is finished and till the child reaches the age of 5. The employees are able to choose to work part-time instead of takin the child care leave.
Adoptive and Foster Care Leave
Adoptive and foster care parents are entitled to 8 months of paid leave, beginning with the date the child was placed in the family; or till the child reaches the age of five.
If the child who was placed in the adoptive or foster care family is under the 3 months of age, the parents are entitled to take a paid leave up to the child’s 11th month to care for the child.
- Sick Leave
Employees are entitled to paid sick leave. An employee is required to provide the employer with a medical certificate that specifies reasons for leave and estimated time of absence. The notice must be provided three days after the beginning of sick leave.
In cases of severe illness, employee’s family is required to provide the medical certificate.
Jury Duty Leave

Bereavement Leave
- Employees are entitled to up to 5 workdays of paid leave due to the death of a close family member.
Voting Leave

Military Leave
Employees are entitled to unpaid leave in order to attend or finish the military service. The employees are entitled to their previous position, insurance, and all the other working benefits, 15 days after the end of military leave.
