Frequently asked questions

To maximize PTO in 2027 in the US, start with Thanksgiving week: request Mon Nov 22, Tue Nov 23, Wed Nov 24 and Fri Nov 26 for nine consecutive days off if Thanksgiving is a company holiday. Veterans Day and observed Christmas offer similar options, depending on your employer's calendar.

Take the four working days around a holiday your employer observes, then include both weekends. For Christmas in the US, request Mon Dec 20 through Thu Dec 23. With Fri Dec 24 off, the break runs from Sat Dec 18 through Sun Dec 26, using four PTO days.

No. Fri Nov 26, 2027 is not a federal holiday on the OPM calendar. Thanksgiving itself falls on Thu Nov 25. Your company may give the Friday off separately, but otherwise you need to request it as PTO to keep the Thanksgiving break uninterrupted through the weekend.

For federal employees following the OPM calendar, Fri Dec 31, 2027 is the observed holiday for New Year's Day 2028, which falls on Saturday. A private employer's schedule may differ. Check that Friday specifically before using the year-end breaks or totals in this guide for your own plan.

Use your employer's calendar, not the full federal list. If your company gives only six holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, on their observed dates), 10 PTO days can cover 35 days across breaks in 2027. That total includes weekends and Jan 1 and 2, 2028.

We'd request Christmas and other must-have dates earlier than the usual booking window. Historical median lead times were 14 days in the US, 18 in Canada and 22 in the UK. These describe past behavior, not required notice periods or approval guarantees; your employer's policy and coverage needs come first.

The 2027 calendar has 52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays, totaling 104 weekend days. That does not mean everyone has those days off: these plans assume a Monday to Friday schedule. The US year-end breaks extend into January 2028, so their totals also include the following year's first Saturday and Sunday.
