What employers need to know
Who qualifies
In Saskatchewan, employees get paid for all 10 public holidays, no matter how they are paid or what hours they work. New employees qualify even if they have worked for you for less than 4 weeks. Someone whose job ends before the holiday does not get holiday pay for it.
Holiday pay
Public holiday pay is 5% of the employee's wages in the 28 days (4 weeks) before the holiday. Include vacation pay for vacation taken and holiday pay for other holidays in that period, but leave out overtime. Hourly-paid construction employees get 4% of wages earned in the calendar year instead (not counting overtime or vacation pay), paid by December 31.
Working on a holiday
Employees who work a public holiday earn 1.5 times their regular hourly rate for every hour worked, on top of their normal public holiday pay. This includes managers and professional employees. In a week with a public holiday, overtime starts after 32 hours, not counting hours worked on the holiday itself.
Holidays that fall on a weekend
If your business is normally open on Sunday, the public holiday pay rules apply to that Sunday. If you are normally closed on Sunday and New Year's Day, Christmas Day or Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday, the next Monday is the public holiday, and Canada Day on a Sunday moves to July 2. A holiday that falls on a Saturday is not moved to another day.
